Description

This is a preorder with street date 8/14/2026. All sales are final.

To dungeons deep and caverns old. The Hobbit Collector Booster Box is the collector's route into Magic's second trip to Middle-earth — twelve 15-card Collector Boosters plus a Traditional Foil Box Topper, built around foils, alternate treatments and the set's ultra-rare Headliner.

What's in the box

  • 12 Collector Boosters, 15 cards each
  • 1 Traditional Foil Box Topper card — a borderless "Middle-earth classic artist" card, one of 40 foil reimaginings of cards that first appeared in 2023's The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth

Every pack, broken down

  • 5 cards of rarity Rare or higher — five per pack, every pack
  • 4 Uncommon, 5 Common, 1 land
  • 11–13 Traditional Foil cards — nearly the whole pack is shiny
  • 0–2 Surge Foil cards

The chase: gleaming gold Smaug

Every recent Magic set designates a single ultra-chase card, and The Hobbit's is Smaug, the Magnificent in gleaming gold — a treatment Wizards created specifically for him. Roughly 500 copies exist worldwide. It appears only in Collector Boosters, it is always printed in English regardless of the booster's language, and it turns up in fewer than 1% of packs.

We'd rather be straight with you about what that means: at those odds a full twelve-pack box is still very unlikely to hold one. Buy this box for the foils, the treatments and the box topper — and treat Smaug as the lottery ticket riding along on top.

Collector Booster exclusives

Several treatments in this set can only be opened from Collector Boosters:

  • Surge Foil — a premium foil above standard traditional foil, with a geometric shimmer that ripples across the art and frame rather than sitting flat. Applied to select Booster Fun cards, the 10 book cover cards and the 25 Dragon hoard frame cards.
  • Dwarvish-language cards — Arcane Signet, Dwarven Warrior, Mox Amber, The Reaver Cleaver and Treasure Vault, printed in Tolkien's Dwarvish runes
  • Borderless and alternate-art Booster Fun cards across the set

The first Middle-earth set legal in Standard

This is the detail most listings bury, and it's the biggest thing separating The Hobbit from its predecessor. The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth was never Standard-legal — it topped out at Modern. The Hobbit's main set (HOB, 248 cards) is legal in every format: Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Commander and Brawl.

That changes the demand picture. Tolkien cards are now competing for Standard slots, not just Commander and collection binders. New mechanics include Storied, Recruit and Hone counters, alongside returning Adventure, Amass and Sagas.

One caveat worth knowing: the companion Eternal-legal set (HOC), which includes the Scene Box cards, is not Standard-legal — those are Commander, Legacy and Vintage only.

Collector Booster or Play Booster?

Collector Boosters are a collecting product. Nearly every card is foil, every pack carries five rares or better, and they're the only source of the exclusive treatments above. They are not draftable.

If you want to draft, run a sealed event, or open packs with a playgroup, you want the Play Booster Box instead — 30 packs of 14 cards, far better cards-per-dollar, and the product the limited format is built around. For a single-player entry point, the Prerelease Pack includes 6 Play Boosters and a spindown counter.
